BERÄTTELSE OM DE NYA UPTÄCKTER, SOM BLIFWIT GJORDE I SÖDERHAFWET, ÄREN 1767, 1768, 1769, OCH 1770, FÖRFATTAD, ENLIGT SEDNASTE UNDERRÄTTELSER...MED EN BISOGAD CHARTA AF HR. ... Swedish translation of Fréville's HISTOIRE DES NOUVELLES DÉCOUVERTES FAITES DANS LA MER DU SUD EN 1767, 1768, 1769, & 1770, first published in Paris in 1774. According to Hill, the work is "an abridged French version of Dalrymple's AN HISTORICAL COLLECTION OF THE SEVERAL VOYAGES AND DISCOVERIES IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN, translated and with a preface by Anne François Joachim de Fréville." Dalrymple was hydrographer to the British Admiralty, and his historical account of the Spanish and Dutch voyages in the South Pacific, first published in London in 1770-71, was designed to stimulate British commercial interest in the area and strengthen the author's claim to the existence of a southern continent. This Swedish edition, translated by Mårten Eklund with an additional appendix, has a map of the South Pacific with the tracks of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, and Cook indicated. Kroepelien notes that although the folding map is mentioned on the titlepage, "it was issued sometime after the publication of both volumes and is thus frequently missing." A scarce Swedish edition of Dalrymple's work.
