An Universal Etymological English Dictionary, Eighth edition, revised. Bailey's first dictionary, originally published in octavo in 1721, was "the most popular and representative dictionary of the 18th century" (Starnes & Noyes). "Bailey's English dictionaries gave a new prominence to etymology and to lexical comprehensiveness, including dialect terms, scientific terms, common words, and even vulgar ones" (ODNB).This copy with an attractive manuscript book label to the binder's blank, of Henry Brooker 1752 in the little cloisters of Westminster Abbey, incorporating a paper onlay frame. Also with the ownership signature of T. Sherwood, 1876, above; both ownership signatures repeated to the front free endpaper.
