Tanahashi Shisui was born in Osaka in 1906. In 1924 he became an apprentice to Ogawa Gesshu. In 1930 he joined the Tampei Photography Club. He spent the war years in Manchuria and returned to Japan in 1947 and opened a photo-studio in Osaka. In 1951 he joined Ei-Q’s ‘Democratic Artists Association’. In 1956 he won the first prize in the Canon Camera Photo Contest resulting in his first book on Mexico. The present is second book, a retrospective of his work in black and white between 1954 and 1973.
