AN INAUGURAL DISSERTATION ON THE WARM BATH...FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF MEDICINE.... Author's inscription to "Mr. Heap" on verso of second leaf. Lockette, doctoral candidate at the University of Pennsylvania, examines the salutary effects of "the Warm Bath" through a series of experiments on himself and his friends. He includes and explains a diagram of "a machine for using the Steam Bath" created by Charles Willson Peale. Peale, whose theories on health included a vegetable diet, plenty of exercise, and lots of sweating, lived to be eighty-nine.
