This drawing was probably executed shortly after Fulton's return to America in 1806, and shows details of flintlock detonators for submarine bombs and underwater guns. Robert Fulton was something of a renaissance man: he studied painting under Benjamin West, launched the first successful paddle-steamer service in the world, designed and tested the first practical submarine, and significantly advanced the design of submarine torpedoes and torpedo boats.
