Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Helen & Ed Case, in recollection of the weeks they helped to make so pleasant in Chapala. Red Warren, August 6, 1941. Chapala." Warren and his wife Cinina moved to Chapala for a few months in the summer of 1941, two years after the publication of this novel.
