First editions of Mazzella’s illustrated work on the antiquities of Pozzuoli and the surrounding areas and Elisio’s work on the mineral waters of Pozzuoli, Baia and Ischia. The simple woodcuts in the first work include the gulf of Pozzuoli, the port, the amphitheatre, the ‘Solfatara’, Cicero’s villa and bath, Lakes Lucrino and Averno, the Miseno promontory, Cuma, Arco Felice, the Grotto of the Sybil etc. Pozzuoli was a large and important Roman port and attracted many eminent Romans who built their country villas in the area. The second part is taken from a number of sources by Elisio and describes the mineral springs in Pozzuoli and its neighbouring areas and their medical properties. He includes an anonymous Latin prose paraphrase of Petrus de Ebulo’s De balneis Puteolanis’ , a poem on the medical benefits of different spa waters from the 14th century.
