John McDouall Stuart gained his early experience exploring with Charles Sturt. Having practised as a surveyor, largely in search of additional pasture for grazing, he went on to lead six expeditions and became the first explorer to cross the continent from south to north. This work covers his second expedition. They departed in April 1859 in search of a permanent freshwater route to the north. Although they didn’t reach the northern boundary, he did find the watered route hopes for. Spanning April 22 1859 to September 3 1860, these eighty pages mark the one of first appearances in print of this expedition.
