Picturesque New Guinea With an Historical Introduction and Supplementary Chapters on the Manners and Customs of the Papuans.

£1,250 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

In the preface the author of this uncommon work decries the lack of photographic illustration in works of travel, and in particular that scientific expeditions had hitherto made little use of the “black art”. This is a beautifully illustrated work and along with with Thomson’s China and Its Peoples, is one of the first to use autotypes as illustrations. The author acccompanied Sir Peter Scatchley who had been appointed High Commissioner in the newly aquired territory in 1885.
