Bodmer painted this portrait of Mexkemáuastan `Stirring Iron' , an Atsina or Gros Ventre chief and medicine man, on about 5 August 1833. The keelboat Flora stopped opposite an Atsina camp at the mouth of the Judith River and was quickly overrun by friendly but insistent Atsinas, including `Stirring Iron'.
