Departing in 1733, Phipp’s led the Racehorse and Carcass in search of a route to India via the Arctic. It was the first expedition to specifically set out for the North Pole since 1615 and they reached as far as 80°48’ before being blocked by the ice north of Spitzbergen. The work includes valuable scientific results obtained on the expedition and a description of the successful efforts to distill sea water into drinking water.
