Original Stories, from Real Life; First Dublin edition, the fourth overall, first published in London in 1788. With two female gift inscriptions, the first on the half-title dated 1792 from Elizabeth Pim to her daughter Anne Jackson, who in turn re-presented the book half a century later in 1842 to her niece Elizabeth Garrat.Original Stories was Mary Wollstonecraft's only work written directly for children, in which the wise and rational governess Mrs Mason educates her "shamefully ignorant" charges Mary and Caroline, who "had caught every prejudice that the vulgar casually instil", towards rational right-mindedness through a sequence of original stories. This edition is notably scarce, with WorldCat listing just nine copies in institutional holdings.
