Prose Dramas. Cecil B. DeMille's set of Ibsen's plays, each volume with his contemporary ownership signature to the front free endpaper and with his bookplate to the front pastedown. DeMille has dated the first volume 6 August 1902, the day of his wedding to the actress Constance Adams, meaning the set can be presumed to be a wedding present. In 1902, DeMille (1881-1879) was just beginning his theatrical career, making this a particularly apposite association for the history of film and theatre. He ranks among the founding fathers of cinema in the United States, making a total of 70 films from 1914 to 1958.Archer's edition of Ibsen, the first collected edition in English, was first published in 1890-91; this later edition was split between London and New York issues, this being the American issue with Scribner's name at the foot of spines.
