OM FOLKVÄLDET I AMERIKA.... A rare contemporary Swedish translation of Tocqueville's landmark work. Tocqueville, under the instruction of the French government, travelled to America in 1831 to study and report on the penal system. He was impressed with the political principles of American democracy during his nine months of travel, and states his views and observations in this work, firm in his belief that the rest of the world was moving in the same direction. He includes discussions of major institutions and aspects of the federal government and political party system, as well as his observations on the American character and slavery. Originally published in France in 1835 and 1840, the work quickly appeared in American, British, Danish, Italian, German, and Spanish editions. This Swedish edition is not listed in Sabin, and only three copies appear on OCLC, at Yale, Swarthmore, and the University of Minnesota.
