Having spent much of his early life in the Navy, Cochrane was able with the peace of 1814 to undertake a journey on foot through France, Portugal and Spain. On his return in 1820 he offered his services to the admiralty witht he object of exploring the Niger, however failing to gain a positive response he decided to travel arround the world, by way of Russia. However on reaching Kamtchatka he married a local woman and decided to return to England.
