Poems: 1928-1931. First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs R. P. Lake, with the kindest regards, Allen Tate, Memphis 24 May 1935." Tate was a member of the Fugitives, a group of Southern poets preoccupied with defending the traditional values of the agrarian South against urban industrialization.Stella McKnight Lake (1859-1947) was a prominent society hostess in Memphis. Her husband was Richard Pinkney Lake (1848-1921), a lieutenant in the American Civil War and later a successful businessman.
