D’Arcçon served with Victor de Broglie’s forces in the Great Siege of Gibraltar during the American War of Independence. He specialised in fortification, and designed elaborate plans for batteries, plates of which are included in this text. This the copy of Lieutenant General George Lane Paker (1724-91), second son of the 2nd Earl of Macclesfield.
