THE GOLD REGIONS OF CALIFORNIA: BEING A SUCCINCT DESCRIPTION OF THE GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, TOPOGRAPHY, AND GENERAL FEATURES OF CALIFORNIA: INCLUDING A CAREFULLY PREPARED ACCOUNT OF THE GOLD REGIONS OF ... The third edition, second issue, according to Kurutz. Foster's widely popular treatise on the gold regions went through three editions in 1848, the last of which contained a one-page map. This edition, published in 1849, is derived from the third 1848 edition, but instead was issued with a folding lithographic map by J.H. Colton which is not present here. "Edward Eberstadt writes: 'This is the first considerable pamphlet on the Gold Regions....The author was the first to suggest going to California in companies or associations, and he predicts that 'one year will see ten of fifteen thousand heady and adventurous Americans in the heart of California, ready to dig gold.' Foster, in his eloquent and stirring introduction, also correctly predicted that a fortune could be made by the enterprising blacksmith, wheelwright, carpenter, shoemaker, etc" - Kurutz.
