Marcos da Lisboa’s chronicle was first published in Portuguese in two volumes from 1556-1568, and, at the command of Philip II, it was translated into Spanish. All early editions in Portuguese and Spanish are rare, the first volume in particular, and it is more commonly found in the present Italian translation. The first two volumes are complete in themselves but according to Palau two later volumes were published by Viotti in 1601. Further editions also appeared in French, German and English. Marcos da Lisboa (1511-91), Bishop of Oporto from 1581, was born in Lisbon to a family named Sylva. He joined the Portuguese Franciscans and studied in Coimbra where he acquired a knowledge of Latin, Greek and Hebrew. “While visiting the principal convents of the Franciscan Order in Spain, Italy and France, at the insistance of the minister general, Fr. Andrea Alvarez, he succeeded in collecting a number of original documents bearing upon the history of the order. Previous to this in 1532 the minister general, Fr. Paul Pisotti, had instructed all the provincials of the order to collect all documents they could find pertaining to the 15th century, for the purpose of continuing the “Conformities” of Bartholomew of Pisa.
