Not one of Smith’s most notable successes, Keith explains the failure of the British Squadron to detain the enemy’s flotilla at Flushing “… notwithstanding the vigorous measures that were used…” on account of “… the numerous disadvantages to which His Majesty’s ships were subjected in consequence of the shallowness of the water, and the effect of the enemy’s field artillery and their batteries on the shore…”
