Stephen Clubb, born in England and not a naturalized citizen of the United States, was second mate on the American ship, Hyades, when he was arrested in January 1808, at the port of Calais. "This prison diary, covering the period from December 1807, to June 1809, details the author's capture by the French during the wars between England and France. It includes interesting descriptions of his travel as a prisoner, comments on the French people, and teaching English in prison" - Smith.
