The author was Chaplain for the United States Navy African Squadron from 1855 to 1857. As well as giving a historical overview of the region, the work provides valuable information on missionary work. This first English edition is rarer than the American first (New York: Derby Jackson, 1860). Copac locates only five copies, at Oxford (2 copies), Cambridge, the National Library of Scotland and the British Library.
