This is an out of series copy, signed by the author and marked "hors commerce". The edition consisted of 26 copies not for sale lettered A to Z, and 100 copies signed and numbered by the author."Critics extolled his gifts as a lyric poet, in particular as one who wrote both wittingly and movingly about love. Merrill's receipt of American poetry's highest honor, the Bollingen Prize, in 1973, was still another confirmation of his significance" (ANB). Yannina is "an elegy for Merrill's father set in the Turkish town of Yannina, once ruled by Ali Pasha, who becomes in the poem the surrogate for Charles Merrill" (Polito, p. 141).
