Bowker family copy, with inscription on the title page: “To A.G. Bowker from Tom Bowker, “Glen Ovis” Carlisle Bridge C.P. South Africa.” J.M. Bowker was the eldest son of Miles Bowker, one of the first settlers in the Cape in 1820. The work includes a biographical sketch, a synopsis of Frontier History and much correspondence between Bowker and Sir B. D’Urban. Bowker served with distinction in the Frontier War of 1834-5. His papers provide an important history of the Eastern Province between 1837-47. Mendelssohn I, p168.
