A translation of the 1798 German edition, which includes notes by the German naturalist, Johann Reinhold Forster. The author, a competent linguist who spoke Tamil and understood Sanskrit, spent thirteen years in India. He produced a grammar of Sanskrit in 1790 and was able to use his linguistic skills to correct many place names on European maps. His return voyage stopped at the Cape of Good Hope and a brief description is included here.
