ANNALS OF THE MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY: 1852; CONTAINING THE ANNUAL ADDRESS BY J. H. SIMPSON... With Simpson's account of an expedition into New Mexico made in 1849 under Colonel Jonathan Washington. The objects of the expedition were to compel the Navajos to comply with an 1846 treaty, and to extend the treaty, so that the Navajos would have the same relationship with the United States as did the Creeks, Choctaws, Cherokees, Seminoles, Winnebagoes, and several other tribes. At one point, Simpson refutes both Ruxton and Gregg in their assertion that dialects in New Mexico are relatively similar. Simpson argues that nothing could be further from the truth, and that inhabitants from one pueblo can only understand inhabitants from another if they have been specially taught.Enhanced by Reverend W. T. Boutwell's account of an exploring expedition led by Schoolcraft to Lake Itasca and the source of the Mississippi River. This is the only appearance of Boutwell's detailed narrative.
