Cooke's career was largely in the West, beginning as an escort for a Santa Fe caravan in 1829, and including service with Phil Kearny at Fort Atkinson in 1831 and then escorting emigrants on the Oregon Trail in 1845. After the events of this book, Cooke went on to command the Mormon Battalion in the conquest of New Mexico and California.A noteworthy account of military duty of the Santa Fe and Oregon trails in the first half of the 19th century.
