Browne’s narrative contains the first information on Darfur available to the English reader. Having set out from England in 1792 he reached Darfur in the following year, where he was imprisoned by the Sultan, having first managed to view the temple of Jupiter Ammon. Following his release he was finally able to return to Egypt in 1796. He was murdered by bandits at the outset of an expedition to Persia in 1812.
