Combes and Tamisier, both French Saint-Simonians, travelled to Abyssinia and the Yemen between February 1835 and March 1837. Tamisier had previously held the post of secretary to the chief medical officer of the punitive expedition against the Wahabys. His journey on that occasion had taken him from Jeddah into the Nedjd and south to the borders of Yemen.
