NABOKOV, Vladimir.

£2,250 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available

Laughter in the Dark. First US edition, first printing, the first to be translated by Nabokov himself, retaining the jacket and in the first state binding of green cloth. Nabokov undertook this US edition after being displeased with the first English translation by Winifred Roy, published in London as Camera Obscura (1935). The present US edition also reflects the substantial revisions Nabokov made to the story while translating it.Nabokov's first novel available in English, it was initially serialized in the literary journal Sovremennye Zapiski under the title Камера обскура (1932). The US edition was also published in orange and brown cloth; "the clear implication is that the green binding has precedence" (Juliar).
