LAN, Wang.

£175 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available

Chinese Opera Watercolors. Volumes III and IV. First editions. Both volumes warmly inscribed by the author to Josephine Pullein-Thompson. One of Taiwan's leading literary figures, Lan was also chairman of the Chinese Watercolor Society, these volumes reproducing some of his colourful operatic images. Probably best known for her pony novels, in her later years Pullein-Thompson was increasingly involved in writers' groups, most importantly English PEN, promoting writers' freedoms around the world. From 1976 to 1993 she was English PEN's general secretary, while Wang Lan was himself director of the Taipei Chinese Center of the International PEN. An attractive association.
