Bookbinding. A Manual for those interested in the Craft of Bookbinding.

£5,000 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

Fine. Inscribed by William Matthews to his wife, Ellen Matthews, in the year of publication, with the binding likely dating from the same year. William (Bill) Matthews was one of the most important bookbinders of the 20th century, not only for the skill of his own work but also for the influence his teaching had on the trajectory of British bookbinding as a whole. Having trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under Peter McLeish, son of the finisher of the Doves Bindery Charles McLeish, Matthews went on to teach gold tooling to a number of noted binders, including Bryan Maggs, Bernard Middleton and Edgar Mansfield. He remains something of a binders’ binder, who produced a relatively small body of work but who is fondly recalled by many for his generosity of spirit and technical skill.
