A Modern Alphabet for Unicorns
£800 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd
Fine, covers very slightly rubbed. Since 1986, the horticulturalist and bookbinder Mary Bartlett has been in charge of the bookbindery at the historic British house and gardens, Dartington Hall. Having initially joined as a garderner, developing a particular interest in gentians, Bartlett began taking lessons at the bindery attached to the house, before going on to take over after the passing of her tutor, Eric McNally. A Modern Alphabet for Unicorns serves as something of a modern emblem book, containing quotes from writers on landscape, biodiversity and habitat change, with illustrations by Norman Young. The theme of Unicorns is one which fascinates Mary Bartlett, seeing in them a metaphor for the spirit; ‘I’ve become as madly devoted to the unicorn as I am to Dartington and books’ (Mary Bartlett).
