A comprehensive manual of Chinese titles for use by Western diplomats and civil servants, merchants, and the military. Not only does it cover the entire hierarchy of officialdom starting with the Emperor and Empress down to local metropolitan administration, it also includes explanations of military ranks and civil service qualifications, and has sections on regional titular equivalents in Mongolia, Turkestan and Tibet. The appendix provides a useful introduction to the use of honourifics in Chinese, a list of Chinese renderings of European titles, and an index of Chinese characters.
