Emblemata.
£1,250 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd
A later, slightly expanded version of the Dutch humanist and physician Hadrianus Junius’ (Adriaan de Jonghe, 1511-1575) popular book of emblems, first published in 1565. The Officina Raphelengiana published two editions of the augmented work, the first in 1595. Junius’ emblems were highly influenced by Sambucus’ own Emblemata , published one year before, but a new feature was Junius’ addition of an extensive commentary. Junius’ Emblemata became very influential in their own right, often cited as part of the ‘canon’ of early emblematic works, together with those of Alciato and Sambucus. The first edition of Junius’ work was published by Plantin in 1565 and comprised 58 emblems with each accompanied by woodcut illustrations. The engravings were designed by Geoffroy Ballain and Pieter Huys, and the woodblocks were cut by Gerard Janssen van Kampen and Arnold Nicolai. Internally a remarkably fine copy, some light browning as usual. Provenance: With the bookplate and shelf ticket of the Earls of Macclesfield’s North Library to upper pastedown and ffep. Also with the Macclesfield’s blindstamp to title page. Landwehr, Low Countries , 283.
