Translation into Portuguese of Scottish hydrographer James Horsburgh’s ‘Compendium or epitome of winds, weather, waves, luminous appearance, and temperature of the Sea’ (London, 1817). The work served as a guide for sailors, covering topics like winds, weather patterns, wave characteristics, the luminescence of the sea, and its temperature, alongside magnetism and compass variations. Horsburgh (1762-1836) was the leading hydrographer who mapped the routes to the Indian Ocean, the Malay Archipelago, and to China. Includes notes and additions by Bras Joaquim Botelho (naval officer, dates unknown) as well as a list of Macau subscribers, at the head of which is the Governor, Adrião Acácio da Silveira Pinto, followed by the names of 80 or so Portuguese dignitaries, merchants and ship’s captains resident in the Far East.
