He was an important exponent of the rise of industrial manufacture in the United States, and the harnessing of chemical and physical science to support it. This book is a visionary exploration of the future of the evolving manufacturing society of the United States, particularly interesting as the North, following Ewbank's formulas, accelerated away from the agrarian economy of the South at an ever-increasing rate.The present copy bears an inscription in pencil on the front pastedown which reads, "William Kelby / N.Y. Historical Society / 2nd Ave. cor 11 St." William Kelby (1841-1898) served as the librarian of the New-York Historical Society from 1893 to 1898 and before that as assistant librarian.
