Report of the commissioners appointed by the New York state legislature to consider the feasibility of constructing what would become the Erie Canal, with accompanying official documents appended at rear. The report explores various issues relating to the financing and construction of the first canal around Niagara, joining the Hudson River to the Great Lakes. The report is signed in type by the following members of the commission: Gouverneur Morris, Stephen Van Rensselaer, DeWitt Clinton, Simeon DeWitt, William North, Thomas Eddy, and Robert R. Livingston. The accompanying frontispiece map shows the "Straights of Niagara from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. 1815" and contains an inset "Vertical Section of the great slope which occasions the Falls...."
