This copy contains the ownership inscription of Amos Eaton: "Amos Eaton's A present from the Bookseller, E. Gates, of Troy. Oct. 17, 1838." Eaton, a noted scientist, educator, and surveyor, was a professor in the Rensselaer School (now Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) in Troy, New York in 1838. This is the first American edition of this work, with corrected and improved text; the addition of latitudes and longitudes for the American coast and the West Indies; and an original system of calculation for lunar navigation by P. Delamar of Philadelphia. The plates, two of which are maps and four of which depict navigational instruments, were engraved by Benjamin Tanner, an important Philadelphia engraver who became a pioneer in bank note engraving.
