TRAVELS IN SOME PARTS OF NORTH AMERICA, IN THE YEARS 1804, 1805, & 1806. Sutcliff was a Quaker merchant from Sheffield who spent several years in America on business. He travelled extensively in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York, spending a good deal of time on both his southern and northern excursions, and giving good accounts of the Genesee country, and of southern slavery, to which he was deeply opposed.
