Gilbert Cannan. First edition, first impression, of this biography of Gilbert Cannan (1884-1955), a prodigious and respected writer whose career was cut short by his confinement in a mental institution from 1923. His interesting life included liaisons with sculptor Kathleen Bruce, who later married Walter Scott, and also actress Mary Ansell, the wife of J. M. Barrie.Henry James once stated of Cannan that "Shaw, Barker and Galsworthy all believe Cannan is going to wipe them out" (cited in ODNB).
