"Emphasizes Philadelphia's strategic position for trade with the rising West" - Howes. The map of Pennsylvania, "reduced with permission from Reading Howells [sic] Map, by Samuel Lewis," is a detailed representation of the state, with rivers handcolored in blue, and canals handcolored in red. Additional material not present in the first edition includes brief sketches of countries which had been markedly improved by canal and river navigation, among them China, Holland, France, Russia, England, and Spain. Noted as well are improvements made in other American states, and proposals for such changes in Pennsylvania.
