Heber accepted the position of Bishop of Calcutta in 1815 and during the course of his tenure travelled throughout the diocese. He visited Ceylon and Bombay, returning to Calcutta in October, 1825. The following spring he visited Madras and other nearby provinces. On April 1 he arrived at Trichinopoly, where he died suddenly two days later. His narrative, first published (posthumously) in 1828, offers many observations on the country and the people.
