The work fictionalizes the newspaper industry during the Depression era to explore the "expression of the bewildered fantasies of Americans during a time of great social and economic distress and psychological anguish" (ANB).The third issue has the imprint of Greenberg; it was first issued by Liveright, who went bankrupt, and secondly by Harcourt, Brace and Company.
