BUDGE, Sir E. A. Wallis.

£900 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available

The Monks of Kûblâi Khân, Emperor of China, First edition, in the scarce jacket, of Budge's English translation of the Syriac narrative, a remarkable 13th-century account of Christian travel from China to the courts of Byzantium, Rome, France, and England during the age of Mongol diplomacy. The translation was drawn from the manuscript tradition first brought to scholarly notice in 1887, when a copy was made at Urmiyah from a text seen in Tekhama, Kurdistan. Budge, Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum, based his edition on the published Syriac text and related manuscript evidence, including British Museum Oriental MS. 3636. The work preserves an early perspective on Asian Christianity and the movement of people and religious communities across the medieval world.
