Moreau, famed military hero, was charged with conspiring against Napoleon, and was sent into exile. He crossed to America, toured the Northeast and Midwest, settled in Delaware for a time, then in New York. With the news of the disasters which befell the French army in Russia during the Napoleonic Wars, he returned to Europe, accompanied by the author, in order to defeat Napoleon, whom he considered a tyrant and threat to France. They made stops at Newfoundland, Sweden, and Germany en route. In Prague he met with the King of Prussia and Emperor Alexander, then joined the army of the allies. Soon after he was badly wounded, had both legs amputated, and died of complications.
