Atlantis. America and the Future. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To John Fothergill, in remembrance of 14 very pleasant though some-what damp days, from, J. F. C. Fuller, 3. Oct. '27". John Fothergill (1876-1957), among the few innkeepers with an ODNB entry, is credited with single-handedly making the profession "smart as well as respectable" (ODNB). The military theorist J. F. C. Fuller (1878-1966) was among the many who flocked to Fothergill's pub in Thame. Following this September 1927 visit, the landlord wrote of him that he was "one of the very human ones, and an Intellectual outside as well as inside the Army" (p. 121), and noted that he was now a "proud possessor" (p. 122) of a copy of Atlantis.
