The pamphlet situates the WSPU's militant campaign among similar historical struggles for increased rights and liberties. The introduction by Henry W. Nevison declares that "we have gained nothing as a free gift... We have fought our way onward" (p. 3).Joseph Clayton (1867-1943) was a journalist, historian, and pamphleteer, whose publications typically espoused his socialist principles. He was a member of the Men's League for Women's Suffrage and was arrested in 1909 for attempting to present a petition to the Prime Minister at the House of Commons.Another variant of this work exists, with green wrappers and a different setting of the text.
