Third edition of this "unflattering picture of the western frontier" (Howes) after the first edition of the previous year. The author was "deputed" by a number of families in England to ascertain whether or not America was worth emigrating to. He remained in the States from 1817 to 1818 and herein offers his observations on all aspects of the country, both east and west, including those on taxes, Blacks, New Orleans, farming, etc., as gleaned from his travels.
