Chinese Temple Frescoes: A Study of Three Wall-paintings of the Thirteenth Century. First edition, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Her Royal Highness, the Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, with the deepest respect of the author. March 27th 1944." The recipient, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, was Vicereine of Canada from 1940 to 1946. In 1934, the author took a professorship in Chinese studies at the University of Toronto.White (1873-1960) spent the first half of his life in China as a missionary, receiving his first posting (Fujian) in 1897. In 1909, he was consecrated Bishop of Henan and, during the next two decades, he purchased antiquities and artefacts for the Royal Ontario Museum, where he later became Keeper of the Asiatic Collection. In 1934, he returned to Canada.
